A Tomato Festival, Part Two
Saturday, 15 August 2026

.
Visitors stroll up the gravel path that leads to the Mother Fire open-flame cooking kitchen.
There is a pizza oven, And someone tossing and spreading the pizza dough.

They're grilling corn over the hot coals. Must have thoroughly soaked the husks.
The cider house is a fascinating construction of rather massive boards but open
to any passing breeze as they are stacked with alternating crosspieces. Outdoor slat walls.
The garden has several beds of cane fruits. There are blackberries
that are just beginning to color up. And elderberries. Though seedy
>
with some effort they make a fine jelly. The June flowers may be
used to make a cordial. I add sliced lemons, rind and all, with sugar.
There are beds filled with a diversity of sunflowers, mostly the golden petal dark center forms.
A small pen next to one of the NOFA’s farmer “vendor village” booths has
a Rhode Island Red hen and two Indian Runner ducks. Easy to identify them -
they have a very upright carriage. Excellent egg layes, almost as good as hens.
It was interesting to see butterfly weed, Asclepias tuberosa, growing in among the cane fruits
and other edibles in the garden beds. It is the food source for monarch butterfly caterpillars.
Pleasant weather and an interesting event. This, the eighth iteration of the FesTomato.
